I am in the process of making my own stain for curly maple using nitric acid and distilled water in a 5/1 solution. Going to split it up and try adding iron from different sources and see how it work out. If the sights are dove tailed (as were mine), that would be an easy fix.To get that grey look you have two options. 1) start with the barrel back "in the white" and in about 150 to 200 years it will have that nice grey look if you occasionally oil the barrel. 2) put a single application of cold blue on it. Pre-drill a couple of undersized holes and tap the staple in. Won't effect the value of this horn one bit! Use a little gun bluing or browning to take the new made off of your staple.
