I recently ran my 2008 Polaris Ranger 500 without oil for about 10 minutes; I was unaware of the problem until the engine noise became very loud and it died. There was probably 30-45 seconds of run time from the time the engine noise level increased until it died.

Sometimes it's just a faulty relay or a bad connection. If the pump is getting power but still don't spool up when you cycle the key, then the pump is bad.
